Club History

In the early months of 1961, a series of discussions were held amongst some patrons of the Hume Hotel, South Gundagai, on the possibility of forming an Anglers Club in Gundagai. Enough interest was shown to warrant calling a meeting in an attempt to form a committee.

The first meeting of the Gundagai Anglers Club was held in the lounge of the Hume Hotel on 21st April 1961 and had an attendance of 16, they were: R.O'Connell (Chairman), R.Roots, G.Hourn, G.Egan, W.Smith, T.Paton, S.Olsen, P.Paton, J.Lenon, G.True, N.Smith, E.Peiper, D.J.Smith, L.Herring, R.(Ken) McCarthy and C.Butcher.

The following Officers were elected:

  • President: Ron O'Connell
  • Vice President: Sid Olsen
  • Secretary: Ron Roots
  • Treasurer: George Hourn

The following were elected to the committee:

  • Don Smith
  • Charlie Butcher
  • Ern Peiper
  • Jack Lenon
  • George True

A motion was passed that membership be limited to forty (40) persons, and membership fees were fixed at two shillings per week. The Club also decided to have a days fishing at Woolgarlo on May 30 and a dozen bottles of beer were raffled to help with expenses.

In less than two years the club was financial enough to have two boats and motors which were officially launched at the old swimming pool near the railway bridge on 3 March 1963.

In 1964 the Club took out a rental on workers huts in the Burrinjuck Park area for use by club members, and over the years they have been greatly improved and furnished with all amenities at the club's expense, and some great work efforts by some members.

Early in 1988 the club become incorporated and is now in a very sound position financially, and has a membership of 109 on 26 February 1998.

Each year a fishing competition is held for members, and on 1 March 1992 in cooperation with the Lions Club held an open fishing competition with good prize money donated by the Lions Club.

Prior to the start of the competition anglers and Lions Club members released a large number of small fish into Morley's Creek, consisting of 1,000 Golden Perch, 700 Silver Perch and 100 Catfish, which is hoped to greatly improve the fishing there in years to come.

The club also has an annual charity bowls day with profits going to a worthy cause.

From the end of the 90's through to the present day, the club has successfully maintained its aims of staying financial, progressing with the rejuvenation and restocking of Morley's Creek hopefully in the near future we can see water flowing in Morley's Creek again but that's another story.

The current membership stands at 131 and these members come from far and wide not just Gundagai.

With the closing of the Hume Hotel the Gundagai Anglers Club had to move and is now based at the Star Hotel.
